You take the midnight subway train

Yesterday evening I enjoyed another evening at the Snatch Rock and Roll Lounge on Macleod Trail in Calgary.  This club is something that I always wanted to do myself.  I am not sure why I didn’t open my own club, maybe it was my own fears around it.  Yes, it even happens to me.  I have great ideas that I never act on.  I am sure I am not alone on this.

So last night one of my childhood favorite bands were in town.  RATT along with Carlos Cavazo from Quiet Riot replaced Robbin Crosby after his death in 2002.  Carlos was awesome and it was the first time I had a chance to see him play live.  So well worth the wait.  Carlos still plays his classic flying V guitar.  The Flying-V to me is very classy and also the best looking guitar out there.

It was great to have RATT come through Calgary.  I know the boys in the band had some challenges in their relationship over the years and it is great that they are able to make it work.  The passion was definitely there and they rocked the club last night.

Now onto Snatch, what a club to see a rock show in.  It blows clubs like the Back Alley away.  What do I like about this club?  First, it is pretty safe place to see a band play.  I have been to a few clubs in and around Calgary where I was slightly concerned for my safety, I don’t get this feeling at Snatch.  The sound is awesome, it is setup to host bands, again unlike the back Alley where the stage was an after thought in my opinion.  So these guys have it right and they understand what it takes to put on a great rock show.  My only complaint about Snatch would be the stupid cages that eat up a tonne of floor space.  That is very minor though.

RATT, is one of these classic bands who will never fade away.  Warren DeMartini was on fire and he hit ever riff and note during the solos.  Again, combined with Carlos the dual guitar force was on fire.  Stephen Pearcy didn’t let us down either, his vocals although not super crisp were still powerful as he pounded out the classics like “Lay it down”, “You’re in Love”, “Sweet Cheater” and “Lack of Communication”.  Oh yeah, they played “Round and Round”, I actually can’t stand that song, so I am happy that they waited to the end to play it.  It is a good song, however, it just got to popular and other tunes were just better rock songs.

So what is my message with my experience with RATT and the Snatch Rock and Roll Lounge?  Even through the tough times and the loss of a critical member of your team, you can still do it.  When you have a dream go for it.  It is still not to late if I wanted to start a rock club (I probably won’t since Snatch is here).  Do what makes you happy, what fulfills you and run with your dreams.
