Should IT Pro’s tie down Michael Dell and Steve Ballmer
Life at the ConnectWise conference is never boring. This morning during Arnie’s keynote another year of attacks towards Dell and a new target Microsoft this year on how these two firms are going after the hosted services world.
Don’t get me wrong I love Arnie and I like everything that ConnectWise stands for, however I think that striking fear into the minds of IT Pro’s on how Dell and Microsoft are going to steal away our clients is just a little over the top.

I am a big fan of the whole hosted services model and after Arnie opened the conference today, Nicholas Carr talked about the changes happening in the IT community. Changes are coming, are we prepared. I like how Nicholas referred to the changes in the IT space to the electricity industry in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The network is now in place and we are starting to see “hockey stick” growth in the entire online services business. Bandwidth is readily available almost anywhere with traditional telco’s, wireless providers and mobility high speed solutions everywhere.
There is a tremendous amount of opportunity in the online services business, are you ready? Yesterday, I had the priveledge to sit in on the Microsoft SBSC Webinar on their S+S strategy and provide a partner perspective on what we need to do NOW to be ready for tomorrow.

We don’t need to run scared here, there is a tonne of opportunity here, we just need to be aware of what is going on around us and how to monopolize on the changes in the market.
I would love to hear from you on your thoughts on the opening session at the ConnectWise conference or the whole hosted solutions model and what you are doing to prepare for it.

- as you know we support Google Enterprise Apps integration for some of our clients. Tuesday I was in Edmonton to train a team of health insurance agents on the use of Gmail and Google Calendar. Corporately they are moving away from desktop software and client servers and adopting tools like SalesForce, Google Enterprise and Amazon S3 storage. I don’t believe that these are the right answers for all companies, but in some cases, they pose an interesting alternative. As service providers, we develop services around these applications that are in the “cloud”.
I agree with you that there are opportunities here that may indeed change the way our services are offered, but they are good opportunities.
Chat with you soon.
