Doing something I love

On Wednesday, I had an opportunity to do something that I truly love in my job.  I had a chance to speak to a class in the IT program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).  I was there to talk on the User Group that I am part of.  I volunteer a number of hours per month to run the Southern Alberta Microsoft User Community (SAMUC).  The talk was great and it was awesome to speak to a class at SAIT.  Most of the talk was on SAMUC however during the client and answer time questions came from all over and turned into what I see coming in the IT industry in the next few years.  Interesting, I have some pretty strong views on the future of technology and I have been pretty good predicting what has happened so far.

Cloud Computing - The cloud is here, it isn’t going away, more and more companies will start to develop applications that will purely work in the cloud and some will only develop solutions that will be cloud only.  With Microsoft’s BPOS and Google Applications more and more companies will move into the cloud and totally abandon on premise computing.

Virtualization - With Green computing here, virtualization is here to stay, not only will we see servers virtualized, desktops and laptops will also be virtualized in the next few years.  My good buddy Dave Sobel at Evolve Technologies in the DC area is releasing a great book soon on Virtualization.  You need to get this book.

Telephony and Data Applications - Not only will telephony and data merge more, applications will be running very soon that links our data systems with our telephones and vice versa.  It is already here, however it will be perfected very soon.

In the evening I was a guest on the ICCA Monthly Webinar where I spoke about my eBook “Connect the Dots” (see tab at the top).  I really like the ICCA group.  The one hour conference call was great, I can’t believe I spoke for 40 minutes straight.  I also touched on the items above, very important stuff in today’s world.

What are you doing to prepare your business for the change? If you not doing anything today, you will be out of business.  Eventually clients will not want servers on their networks or at least farm out some of the solutions to a hosting provider.  This may be Microsoft or some other vendor, the wave of hosted solutions is coming and it is time now to be prepared.

I love speaking to IT Professionals, Microsoft Partners and computer consultants any where in the world.  Plus, I have a very strong passion for getting up in front of clients and customers to inform them about technology and how the right technology can have a positive impact on their business.  Many IT Professionals focus on the bits and bytes, however, there is so much more than the techy stuff in today’s world.  The technology doesn’t matter to executives these days.  Actually, I said the same thing three years ago, I knew I was on the right track.

Don’t get swallowed up by the tsunami!
